Remodeling your basement can be a big undertaking but in some homes it’s possible to nearly double the usable square footage. You can create this space from the ground up and see some amazing benefits. Unlocking more square footage: Basements generally have a lot of space and depending on the size of your home adding an extra basement room could impact its resale value as well as give you more living space.
Depending on the size of your basement you can include an entertainment room, another bedroom or even just a recreation room or sitting room. If you’ve ever wanted more space in your home finishing your basement is an excellent move.
Before we can start drawing blueprints, you need to figure out how you are going to use the basement. Finishing the basement without a specific use in mind may lead to a dysfunctional space. For example, if you want to serve drinks, you could use a mini-bar with a sink, which requires plumbing rough-ins. Similarly, if you know where the TV will go, you can create a built-in and pre-wire the outlet to avoid the dangling cords.
Once you have decided on the use, the process is mostly straightforward from there:
- Draft the plans and obtain permits
- Choose materials and finishes
- Install wiring and plumbing
- Frame and put up drywall
- Install floor coverings
- Add light fixtures, outlet covers and other finishing touches
